Biography

Lyric bass Trevor Eliot Bowes was born in Victoria, Canada and studied at the University of Toronto, the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Britten-Pears Young Artists Programme and at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He has been praised for his “light but very dramatic voice” and “great potential as a singing actor”. (Opera Canada) His operatic roles include the title role in “Le Nozze di Figaro”, Leporello (Don Giovanni), Don Alfonso (Cosi Fan Tutte), Death (Savitri), Cadmus/Somnus (Semele), Léandre (L’amour des Trois Oranges), Don Inigo (L’Heure Espagnole), Simone (Gianni Schicchi) and Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) amongst many others. He has appeared in the Aldeburgh festival as Trulove in Stravinsky’s “The Rake’s Progress” as well as in Purcell’s “King Arthur” under Laurence Cummings and “The Faerie Queen” under Harry Bickett. Other major concert appearances include Handel’s “Messiah” for the London Handel Festival, Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols with English National Opera under Martyn Brabbins, Bach’s Cantata 71 under Helmuth Rilling in the Toronto International Bach Festival and the thief in Grieg’s “Peer Gynt” with the RSNO, along with Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”, Vaughan Williams’ “Hodie” and Handel’s “Messiah” in cities across Canada. Trevor has also performed in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Hamburg as Fedro in Early Music Russia’s production of “Boris Goudenow” (Johann Mattheson’s 1710 version) and in Strasbourg with Le Parlement de Musique, as Nanni in Haydn’s “L’Infedelta Delusa”. In 2008 Trevor joined Opera North in Leeds where he performed and covered various roles including Despard in “Ruddigore”, Surin in “The Queen of Spades” and Čekunov in Janáček’s “From the House of the Dead”. Highlights with Opera North include performing opposite Sarah Connolly as Talbot in Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda”, and the drum-maker in Jonathan Dove’s “The Adventures of Pinocchio”. More recently Trevor has made debuts at the Glyndebourne Festival (Footman, Der Roskenkavalier), Opera Holland Park (Lakai, Ariadne auf Naxos), Grange Park Opera (Silvano, Un Ballo in Maschera) and English National Opera (Ben Benny, “Paul Bunyan”, Cappadocian, “Salome”, Jose Castro, “La Fanciulla del West”; Policeman, “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk”). 2016 marked the release of his first recording as Arimanes in Balfe’s “Satanella” on Naxos with Maestro Richard Bonynge.  Trevor is currently one of Barbara Hannigan’s Equilibrium Young Artists.
